HEROES OF HOCKEY: Volunteer Recognition Program
From Hockey Victoria;
Hockey Victoria was recently successful in sourcing $12,500 funding under the Victorian Government’s Volunteer Innovation Program.Hockey Victoria’s initiative, Heroes of Hockey, aims to recognise and reward Club volunteers for their contributions, showcase examples of high achievement and best practice within the volunteering space and inspire other members of the hockey community to invest time into their Club and our sport.
Heroes of Hockey provides each Victorian Hockey Club and Association (including Country Clubs) with the opportunity to nominate one male and one female volunteer from their Club for recognition. Hockey Victoria will also recognise 20 (10 male, 10 female) of its own volunteers across the State Teams, Officiating, Development and Events departments.
Hockey Victoria will not select an overall winner – this scheme is about providing support to all Victorian Hockey Clubs & Associations to recognise their volunteers on equal terms at the State Level.

a note to all members and supporters
One of the greatest features of our club is the support that all of our teams, men’s, women’s and juniors alike, receive from our members and spectators. However, there have been a few instances recently where the support we are famous for has crossed the line and become bad behaviour. One case in particular, we have had to respond formally to Hockey Victoria, outlining the steps we will be taking to address the situation, and by dealing with and eradicating the recent behaviour immediately, our Club continues to be enjoyable and uphold its friendly, family atmosphere. This type of behaviour can’t be ignored or allowed, as the consequences with Hockey Victoria will become more severe, our reputation within the hockey community will be damaged and the club will become a less enjoyable place for all members and families involved.
The message to everyone involved at the Altona Hockey Club is fairly simple: Treat everyone involved in the game with respect. This includes umpires and officials, AHC players and supporters as well as opposition players and supporters.
Never abuse umpires, players or spectators and always display a high level of sportsmanship.
Always display behaviour that will enhance the image and reputation of the AHC and its members.
Hockey Victoria is very serious about adhering to the Code of Behaviour they have established. Whilst I have communicated The Hockey Victoria Code of Behaviour previously, it can be accessed on the HV website via this link – http://www.hockeyvictoria.org.
The Altona Hockey Club also has our own policy relating to Acceptable Behaviour, and this can be accessed via this link – https://www.altonahc.org.au/
As we are now into the second half of the year with a number of our teams having a chance at competing in finals, this is the time when all the positive aspects of our club should be on show. The responsibility rests with all of us involved with the AHC to display these qualities and look after each other.
Thanks for your time and I look forward to your assistance with improving our club environment.
Go A’s

The Prez Sez…
As President of the Altona Hockey Club, I’m regularly humbled by the generosity of our members and last weekend it happened again. Over the last couple of weeks we asked members to donate items which could be used to make up hampers for a raffle. The end products were fantastic – a sincere thank you to Angela for her work in organising these. On Saturday the raffle was held with tickets being sold throughout the day. I’m pleased to say that we managed to raise a total of $683, for which we will be donating to Ovarian Cancer Research. A big thank you to everyone who contributed and congratulations to our raffle winners.
On Saturday we also held a Mother’s Day Lunch to celebrate our Club’s wonderful mums and their contributions to AHC. At the lunch it was a privilege to listen to Neona Connolly speak about not only Ovarian Cancer research but also her own personal experience with Ovarian Cancer – a very frank, confronting and emotional story and one that I will never forget.
Over the last few weeks there have been several trials for representative teams, with results being posted during the week. I’m pleased to say that quite a number of our players have been selected in these teams. Congratulations to Taylah Brennan and Tegan Purser who have made the U21 Women’s Team and Jesse Gatt and Chris Coleman who remain in contention for the U21 Men’s Team, as they are still in the squad which will be finalised by the end of May. We have also had 13 boys and 9 girls selected in the Western Wildcats teams covering U13, U15 & U17 age groups. A great effort by everyone, the Club is proud of you all and best of luck in your tournaments.
Finally a reminder about some very important upcoming events. This weekend our State League 1 Men will be taking part in the Michael McLean Memorial day at Greensborough. On Wednesday, 6th June we will hold the annual Steph Gracie game against Lowther Hall at Altona. These are two significant events on our calendar and I encourage as many of our members as possible to support these events through your attendance.
The Prez Sez…
In response to the feedback of my readers, a very brief Prez Sez this week…
- Representative team trials. Quite a few of our players are attending trials at the moment for representative teams (school, regional and state). I wish you all the best of luck. I’m sure you’ll represent yourselves and our club very well.
- I was impressed with the junior results from last round. Our 12 junior teams recorded 5 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses. Keep up the good work.
- Mums make a great contribution to the success and enjoyment of our club. I know quite a few mum’s are being rewarded with a lovely lunch at the club on Saturday. If you can’t make it to our lunch, I hope Mother’s Day on Sunday is relaxing and enjoyable.
- Greensborough hockey club will hold the Michael McLean Memorial Day during Round 6. Our State League 1 men’s team have accepted an invitation to be involved. Details of the day appear later in the newsletter. I sincerely appreciate Greensborough’s offer to involve us in the occasion.
- See below for details on our new website. It’s been reinvigorated and I’m confident it will become the single point of reference for all hockey matters for our members.
